A day at work above the clouds
Pilots have an exciting and fascinating job. In what other office do you have the chance to see a sunrise over Rio de Janeiro or an aurora over Antarctica? But it is also a demanding job, in which the working day sometimes starts at 3:00 in the morning. What is a normal working day really like for a Lufthansa pilot?
We asked Christoph Thurn to tell us about it. Christoph is 27 years old and has been a Lufthansa co-pilot for the past five years. He describes his working day on the basis of a flight from Frankfurt (FRA) to Berlin Tegel (TXL) in a Boeing B737.
Before the flight
Approximately one hour before the flight, the crew gets together for a pre-flight meeting. We learn that our plane today is the D-ABJD. While the purser gets his flight attendants ready for the flight, the captain and I receive all the data we need for today's flight. We have weather forecasts for the destination airport as well as wind and weather maps for the entire route. Next we take a look at the NOTAMs.
We also do our fuel planning. This means that we calculate the amount of kerosene we need for today's route. We also determine the alternate fuel and final reserve fuel. Now it's time to get on board!
Next we check the possible alternate airports along the route.
