Are children allowed to travel alone?

Your question of the month in September (2015)
Lisa, 10 years old

A flight with the family is exciting and fun! However, sometimes it is necessary for children to travel alone. That is no problem with Lufthansa: More than 80,000 children and teenagers, who are travelling alone with Lufthansa, are looked after every year. That's about the same amount of people that fit into a very large football stadium!

Children aged between 5 and 11 years may only fly unaccompanied if they are travelling with someone, who is at least 12 years old or if they are using our special service. However, children aged between 12 and 17 years can also be looked after on request. If you are travelling alone, your parents have to register this with Lufthansa in advance – either at the travel agent's or directly with the Lufthansa Service Center. There, you will be informed about what has to be taken into consideration.

When your parents take you to the airport on the day of the journey, you register directly with the special service. There, you will receive a yellow Lufthansa shoulder bag, which you have to carry clearly visible during your journey. You can also pack all important documents into this bag, such as:

  • your airline ticket
  • a valid passport
  • a declaration of consent from your parents that you may travel unaccompanied
  • the special service form your parents have to fill out prior to the journey
  • an allergy pass should you have any allergies

The Lufthansa special service will look after you at the airport. Your parents may, of course, stay at the airport until departure. By the way, at the airports in Frankfurt and Munich there are great care facilities with drawing corners, children's cinemas and much more for your waiting time.

During the flight, the nice Lufthansa flight attendants are there for you. You can approach them at any time, should you have questions. In addition, there are delicious kid's menus and toys on board. And if you have to transfer: A Lufthansa employee will pick you up at the airport and take you to your next flight. Furthermore, somebody will always stay with you until the person, whom you are visiting, picks you up at the destination airport.

Important: The regulations for children travelling unaccompanied are not the same for all airlines. Therefore, inform yourself well in advance of the flight what has to be taken into consideration.
