On the island of Cyprus the summers are dry and often very hot. Most of the rain falls between November and March/April.
Since 1974, Cyprus has been divided into two parts: a Turkish part and a Greek part. There were conflicts between the Greek and the Turks at the time. The Turks subsequently occupied the north of the island. The south is governed by the Republic of Cyprus. For a few years now, there have been border crossings again allowing people to visit each other and to access the other part of the island respectively.
